Unit 8 – Tuning F#3 and A#3 – Small Scale or Unknown Scale

v.17

Here are the steps you need to do, to submit your F#3 and A#3 for marking.

All notes must be open unisons, no mutes, unless strings have been eliminated.

  1. Tune F#3 and A#3 using whatever system you want.

    Start the recording.
  2. Indicate whether any strings have been eliminated due to false beats. (You must use the false beat elimination procedure.)
  3. Say which scale your piano has, i.e. which scale you are tuning your piano to; small, medium, or large. If you don’t know, just say “I don’t know what scale my piano is.”
  4. Play F#3 and A#3 individually, softly, 3 seconds each.
  5. Play F#3 and A#3, 3 times very loud.
  6. Then play again, F#3 and A#3 individually, softly, 3 seconds each.
  7. Now play F3, F#3, A3, A#3, C#4, D4, F4, and A4 individually, softly, 3 seconds each.
  8. Play A3-C#4, F#3-A3, and C#4-F4.
  9. Play C#4-F4, A#3-C#4, and F4-A4.
  10. Play F3-A3, F#3-A#3, and F3-D4.
  11. Play A3-C#4, A#3-D4, and F#3-A3.

If at this point any notes do not pass the stability test according to your ears, use the stability troubleshooting procedure to retune them and start the recording over at step 4.
