Unit 3 – Tuning a Pure 4:2

v.13

Send in a video of the tuning procedure and the submission procedure unless your instructor has told you they only need the submission procedure. They may also say they only need audio.

Tuning Procedure:
1. Start with an open trichord on A4.
2. Mute one string of A3 (making it a DSU)
3. Mute one or two strings of F3; your choice. (The single string F3 is a clean unison clean, but the DSU gives you more practice.)
4. Set F3 so that F3-A4 is about 4-5 bps; a politely clapping speed.

5. Play F3-A3 and F3-A4. If they are equal, you have a pure 4:2. Remove the mute on A3 and tune the third string clean. Go to Step 7.

6. If F3-A3 and F3-A4 are not equal, move A3 using DSU shimming/cracking. (Move one string then the other to make a clean DSU again)

7. When you are done, confirm that the octave is a clean, pure 4:2;
Play A3-A4 and listen at A5; the 4:2 coincident partial.
If the 4:2 (A5) is beating or moving, check the unisons.
If the unisons are clean, F3-A3 and F3-A4 are not equal. Listen again this time trying to hear them NOT equal.

Submission Procedure
1. Play F3, A3, and A4 separately, 3 seconds.
2. Play A3 three times loudly (Stability test)
3. Play F3-A3, F3-A4, A3-A4, three seconds each.
