Unit 22 – Final Tuning

v.10

The student, with the help of the instructor, will find a concert level technician to listen to one of their tunings on a fine concert grand piano.

Then the concert technician will grade the student using the following scale:

Level 1 – The student is not ready to tune pianos for money.

Level 2 – The student is ready to tune residential pianos, but not for concert halls or demanding musicians.

Level 3 – The student is ready to tune for concert halls and demanding musicians but there is an area for improvement. (Usually speed or unisons)

Level 4 – The student is ready for concert halls and demanding musicians. This level is only given out when the student has impressed the concert technician and the concert technician can find little or nothing to improve.

IMPORTANT!
You need to select the proper piano technician to mark your last assignment. We will not accept just any piano technician. They need to have concert-level skills.

Concert Tuner, for our definitions:

A concert tuner, for our purpose of finding someone to mark your last assignment, is someone who falls into at least one of these categories:

1) They tune for a concert hall regularly

This does not include someone who has tuned for a concert hall but has not been called back within the last year.

2) They tune for at least one concert pianist.

A concert pianist is a pianist who is paid and who travels internationally to do concerts at concert halls.

It does not include someone who plays for free and has performed a concert at their local church.

Sample letter for concert halls/stores/piano technicians to help you find a concert-level technician to mark your final assignment.

“Dear Store Owner/Concert Hall/Piano Technician,

I am studying concert-level piano tuning at the International Piano Technicians School with Mark Cerisano, RPT. We are studying the Go A.P.E. aural piano tuning system for more Accurate, Precise, and Efficient piano tunings.

We are looking for a concert-level piano technician to grade one of my tunings for my final assignment.

For our purposes, a concert-level piano technician is one who tunes for a concert hall regularly, which means more than once a year. They may also tune for a concert-level pianist who is a professional pianist who has travelled to perform internationally at different concert halls in other cities.

We are looking for a technician who is willing to grade my tuning and who will be paid. They will receive instruction on specifically what the school is looking for.

If you know anyone who can perform this service for us and matches the description above, please contact me.

Thank you for your time,”
